About the Temple of Olympian Zeus

Also known as the Columns of the Olympian Zeus, this mythical temple in the heart of Athens city was built for the father of all Greek gods, Zeus. The credit for this iconic work of art goes to Athenian tyrants who started the construction of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in the 6th century BC.

However, the creation of what was envisioned to be the largest temple in Greece couldn’t have been carried out if it wasn’t for the famous Roman Emperor Hadrian, who ordered its completion in the 2nd century AD. Now it’s a must-see destination in Greece, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus tickets cost 8€ in winter and 4€ in summer.

There are many ways to get to the Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens. The easiest one is to get on the Line 2 metro from the Acropolis station. If by a chance, you are at the Athens National Garden, you can get there in less than 5 minutes on foot. The Temple of Olympian Zeus opening hours are 8 am to 3 pm on all days of the week.

    Temple of Olympian Zeus Facts

Here are some facts about the Temple of Olympian Zeus that you didn’t know:

    • The original structure of the temple had 104 massive columns, each as tall as 17 meters, and made from a single piece of white Pentelic marble. Pentelic marble is famous for its sturdiness which is why so many ancient Greek structures are still standing after decades.

    • The Temple of Olympian Zeus has been through a fair share of storms, earthquakes, and natural disasters in the early centuries after its completion. After all the destruction, only 15 of the 104 columns survived, which you see today.

    • The temple was severely vandalized and plundered by the barbarians a century after its completion in the era of the Roman King Hadrian. Its condition further went downhill after the fall of the Roman Empire.
    • The Temple of Olympian used to be adorned by a large collection of statues, maps, and visuals of the Roman provinces. The famous statues included those of the Roman gods, King Hadrian, and Zeus, all of which are in ruins now.
